The challenge

Why wear parts keep coming back

Every worn liner is a stop, a crew, lost tonnes and another order for spares. The usual answer is to fit the same plate again, which repeats the schedule.

“

Ferobide is cut to shape with ease. This, combined with superior toughness, makes Ferobide the ideal choice for high abrasion situations.

Jackson Mitchell CMO, Markon Ltd

Overlay plates, white iron and AR steels each wear out and need replacing. Ferobide is longer lasting than all three.

Unscheduled stops to replace worn parts cost production, labour and spares, and they push up cost per tonne.

Brazed tungsten carbide and glued ceramics cannot be fitted everywhere. Ferobide can be welded in any position, including where brazing tungsten or gluing ceramics cannot be used.

Ferobide is easy to install and quick for repairs, so worn areas can be protected again fast, and the plant is back up and running sooner.

Iron ore spoon chute trial: Canadian mining operation

In an iron ore spoon chute in Canada, Ferobide plates were fitted in the areas of highest wear, alongside white cast iron plates. After 5 million tonnes of ore had passed through the chute, the white cast iron plates had worn away, while the Ferobide plates remained intact.

Cement case study, Nigeria

From 2 to 4 months to over 13 months and counting.

At a cement plant in Nigeria, the wear liners in a vertical roller mill typically lasted 2 to 4 months. After a 4 month trial, the plant installed Ferobide across the critical zones of Production Line 1. The plates have supported more than 3 million tonnes of production with less than 50% wear volume loss, and the plant is preparing to extend Ferobide to the raw mills on all three of its production lines.

The solution

Built for sliding wear

Tungsten carbide particles with a hardness of HV 1500 are bonded in a steel matrix of HV 650, on a steel backing. Unlike conventional tungsten carbide, which has to be brazed, Ferobide can be welded in any position.

Hard where it matters

HV 1500 carbide in a steel matrix of HV 650.

Welds in any position

MMA, TIG or MIG, keeping heat input to a minimum.

Weld or stud fix

Weld on, or supply with studs for quick mounting where welding is not an option.

Quick to cut on site

Cut through the steel backing with an angle grinder. Custom liners available.

What it is made of, and where it stops

The tungsten carbide hard phase has a hardness of HV 1500 and the steel matrix HV 650. Ferobide is cut to shape and welded with MMA, TIG or MIG in any position, keeping heat input to a minimum. Where welding is not possible, it is available stud welded for screw fixing.

Sizes

Plates of 200 x 200mm and strips of 40 x 200mm and 25 x 180mm on a steel backing, with custom liners available. Contact Tenmat Wear to confirm the right thickness for your application.

Test standard

ASTM G65 tested. The comparison figures on this page come from controlled abrasion testing against the materials Ferobide replaces.

Honest limits

Ferobide is made for sliding wear and abrasion and is very good in low to moderate impact. It is good for erosion by particles larger than 1mm.

It is not suitable for high impact, for erosion by particles smaller than 1mm, or against corrosion from strong alkalis, acids or brines. Standard grades are not intended for leading edges or above ground, high speed use, and Tenmat Wear offers leading edge solutions on request.

Wear life figures based on Tenmat Wear evaluation using ASTM G65 low stress abrasion testing. Brazed pure tungsten carbide carries a marginal wear life advantage over Ferobide; Ferobide's advantage is standard weld installation with no specialist equipment.

Designed for straightforward installation using MMA, TIG or MIG welding in any position.

01

Cut to shape

Ferobide tiles are easy to cut to the exact shape required. Standard and custom sizes are available.

02

Position and clamp

Clamp tiles in position on the wear area. A single tack weld per tile holds them before final welding.

03

Weld

MMA, TIG or MIG welding in any position, keeping heat input to a minimum, including positions where brazing or ceramic adhesive cannot be used.

04

Quick for repairs

Easy to install and quick for repairs, so worn areas can be protected again fast.

What Ferobide delivers for mining operations, beyond the lab and on the bottom line.

Extended part life

Outlasts overlay plates, white iron and AR steels, extending part life and reducing replacement frequency.

Reduced unplanned downtime

Longer service life means fewer unscheduled stops. More uptime, more tonnes, lower cost per tonne.

Weld anywhere it is needed

Welds in any position, where brazing tungsten or gluing ceramics cannot be used.

Lower inventory requirement

A small number of stocked sizes can be used for a wide range of parts, reducing capital tied up in spares.

Improved operating efficiency

Less time on replacement and maintenance frees resources for production, improving profit and efficiency.

Increased payload potential

Maximum wear protection without the weight penalty, allowing payload increases or reduced tyre wear.

Reduced diesel use

The better wear protection to weight ratio means less weight to haul and less diesel used.

Designed to optimise your cost per tonne

Maintenance can account for 25 to 45% of a mine’s operating cost. A wear plate replaced less often means fewer parts to buy, stock and fit, and fewer stops.

FAQ

Mining wear parts FAQs

In ASTM G65 testing, Ferobide gives up to 8× the wear life of AR steel 500HB. It gives maximum wear protection without increasing weight, which can increase payload or reduce tyre and linkage wear. Total cost over the life of the part is lower with Ferobide despite the higher initial material cost.

Ferobide delivers up to 4× longer wear life than chromium carbide overlay in ASTM G65 testing. It welds in any position with MMA, TIG or MIG.

Ferobide protects chutes, apron feeders, hoppers, bins and surge bunkers, mill liners, skirt liners, guide rails and pads, mixer paddles and scrapers, buckets, dump truck bodies and augers.

Ferobide is cut through its steel backing with an angle grinder, clamped in place and welded with MMA, TIG or MIG in any position, keeping heat input to a minimum. It is easy to install and quick for repairs.

In ASTM G65 testing, Ferobide delivers up to 8× the service life of AR steel 500HB, up to 4× the life of chromium carbide overlay, and up to 3× the life of white cast iron. In the field, Ferobide plates remained intact after 5 million tonnes of iron ore, and an iron ore feeder liner showed 0.5mm of wear after 6 months, indicating more than 3 years of life.
